Sensasi

Seni Sana Sini (lit. Art There Here) was established in 2012 by I Made Arsa Wijaya (Wawan) and Ida Bagus Putu Pradnyana Putra (Gustu) and named for their habit of traveling great distances to get their gamelan kicks before owning an ensemble themselves. The group’s debut album, Sensasi, is a collection of new works for their uniquely-tuned bamboo jegog ensemble composed by members of the group: Ida Bagus Putu Pradnyana Putra (Gustu), I Putu Juni Suta Widnyana (Junik), Putu Nova Handiyana (Nova), Komang Wahyu Yastawan Putra (Wahyu), I Made Arsa Wijaya (Wawan). Pieces range from new takes on longstanding forms performed by a full ensemble to radical explorations for smaller collections of jegog instruments, including Wawan’s experiments using multiple metronomes to establish phasing tempos for players to follow. The title of the album is a play on the group’s name (Sen = Seni; Sa = Sana; Si = Sini).

Jamberana illustrates a forest. Jamberana itself is the person that gave the Jembrana regency its name.

2. Skala #3
An exploration in which a subset of instruments from jegog play according to four different metronome settings. The interactions of tempos at 40, 50, 100, and 120 bpm create a seemingly disorganized organization of sounds.

3. Teruntuungan
A type of opening piece used to express gratitude to the god Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa at the beginning of jegog performances. The traditional teruntuungan form has been developed through treatments of rhythm of dynamics to create this teruntuungan piece in 2015.

4. Serupa tapi Tak Sama
Single line strokes drawn onto a sheet of canvas fabric all look the same. But if done using a blend of colors they create a beautiful effect giving each stroke unique identity and producing a larger minimalist form. This composition was inspired by such a painting created by I Kadek Parnata and was first performed at the Seni Sana Sini anniversary in 2016.

5. Munyin Tiying
Munyin Tiying illustrates the natural jungle environments that have become increasingly scarce in our modern era. Munyin means ‘sound’, and tiying is a type of bamboo. Munyin Tiying refers to the sound of bamboo trees rustling in the wind and the various natural rhythms that result. The composer has interpreted music elements such as rhythm, melody, tempo, and dynamics through the lens of this natural phenomenon and implemented them into this new piece for jegog ensemble.

6. Jenjang
A composition structured into stages organized starting from the highest octave and smallest rhythmic units moving towards lower octaves and larger rhythmic phrases. This piece was performed at the Innovative Arts Performance event at the Bali Arts Festival in 2015.

7. Talikunda
Subak is a community organization that manages the irrigation systems used to water rice paddies in Bali. In order to achieve the goal of bringing water to different farmlands, the network of irrigation facilities needs to be developed. Talikunda, or what is often called saluran cacing (worm tunnels), refers to the channels built by farmers to bring water from natural streams to each plot of land. Each rice paddy has several channels connecting it to surrounding paddies. The density of water to each paddy is carefully controlled, sometimes flowing quickly, sometimes slowly, from high places to lower elevations with a beautiful trickling sound.

8. Intonasi

Inspired by the well-established conventions of traditional teruntuungan pieces, the composer has attempted to transform melodic, rhythmic, and tempo tendencies into a new form within the teruntuungan style.
