IN…SE…

IN…SE… is a two-hour operatic work combining voices, gamelan, shadow theater, and dance that resulted from collaboration between Cypriot composer Andys Skordis, Serbian screenwriter Jelen Vuksanovic, and the Bali-based Narwastu Art Communtiy. The score creates expansive and imaginative textures that cleary draw inspiration from Balinese gamelan, but without slipping into superficial imitation. The libretto integrates the Balinese concepts Sekala and Niskala (seen and unseen) and a fictional character from the present with the adventures of Bima in the Bima Suci. The result is a ritual atmosphere wherein light and dark meet, two clashing worlds entangle, and the protagonists are transformed.
The opera was premeried and recorded in a carefully designed space that encouraged the audience to feel as if they were part of a shared and transformative experience. All musicians, performers, and singers surrounded the audience, creating an atmosphere where everyone could undergo a mental, physical, and psychological journey together.
Synopsis: In…Se… intertwines elements of Bima’s quest with the struggles of a fictional woman from the present named Ida. Both are engaged in rites of passage, encountering near death experiences that transform them. Their struggles are presented in parallel dimensions connected by mystical threads where they undertake similar paths of learning and demonsrtate willingness to grow. Bima is on a quest for holy water, sent by Brahmana, while Ida finds herself living a life that clashes with her innermost desires. The strength of character Bima must identify within himself in order to successfully complete his quest corresponds with Ida’s struggle to identify reasons to live that resonate with instincts she’s had since a child. Both are at their breaking point. Actions must be initiated and decisions must be made. Mystery allows them to find the resolve needed to complete journeys that involve walking paths unknown. Connected across relative space and time, they eventually meet, inspiring change, awakening strength, and giving birth to light. Their inner conflicts invite us to identify with their struggles, while witnessing their transformations encourages us to let them accompany us on our own inner journeys.
