Insitu Sessions Volume 6

Compilation of works recorded at the August 19th 2018 Insitu Session at Pura Purusada in Desa Kapal, Kec. Mengwi, Kab. Badung, Bali.

The sixth volume in our Insitu Sessions series includes seven new works recorded in the shadows of Pura Purusada’s 14th century East-Javanese architectural features and a hundred-year-old Banyan tree that towers over its outermost courtyard. Highlights include Ni Made Ayu Dwi Sattvitri’s Ngimbang, wherein gender wayang players invert the register and contour of seed patterns by performing them on both sides of the instruments, and I Made Aristanaya’s rhythmic kaleidoscope Mata Kaki, an expansive study of temporality for small and large gongs that renders audible the potential for different perspectives to be (mis)aligned. Though I Putu Arya Deva Suryanegara’s intersecting explorations of communication, “O” and Zero Sympathy, are perhaps the most boundary-pushing works on this volume, as they apply pressure to aesthetic and cultural boundaries simultaneously. The former combines bronze, bamboo, and iron instruments with 15+ kendang and a battery of special-ordered kulkul typically reserved for signaling community members, while the latter explores the interactive possibilities created when that wireless communication technology is subjected to amplified sympathetic resonance and feedback.

Track Details

1. Ngimbang
Ngimbang (“balanced”) refers to the concept of balance that underlies this music. The composition uses an unconventional spatial arrangement of gender wayang instruments and develops novel playing techniques from this setting.

2. Solar System
This composition uses the circular patterns of a solar system to reflect upon creative processes. Continuous renewal occurs when an artist understands the expressive essence of creative space. The intrinsic similarity within successive stages of cyclical processes allows older events to motivate future developments. These may result in bright or dark futures, the birth of new systems or the stagnation of old systems. Solar System utilizes traditional musical materials in unconventional ways and prioritizes musical text as its means of communication. Please enjoy this musical flow.

This composition develops ideas from Anomali 5, which was performed with friends in Vancouver.

7. Zero Sympathy
Zero Sympathy is a section of the composition O, which uses electronics to treat sympathetic resonances found in gamelan instruments. This physical phenomenon is produced by the sound of kulkul instruments, which when struck transmit longitudinal sound waves through air molecules causing gamelan keys with similar frequencies to vibrate. These sympathetic resonances are captured by piezo transducers attached to the keys and amplified using live mixer feedback to create electronic sounds.
For this recording, Zero Sympathy was performed separately from the rest of “O” in order to develop the compositional idea to involve additional musicians performing the kulkul instruments.
