Pesta Nada

Gamelan Pesel of Br. Kehen, Desa Kesiman, Kec. Denpasar Timur, Kota Denpasar, Bali.
Pesta Nada (Festival of Notes) features seven new works by I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik) that capture the cheerful solidarity of the players who bring them to life on his innovative Gamelan Pesel. Overall, this material leans into the uplifting and accessible sounds that contribute to the group’s popularity, though there are also moments suggesting that distant sound worlds may have stirred Arik’s imagination. The effects of mixing selonding and semar pegulingan instruments, which inspired Gamelan Pesel’s unique design, are also prominent throughout. This includes distinct melodic play invited by the instruments as they interact in the lower register, as well as the ensemble’s signature timbre, which results from the blending of selonding’s iron keys with semar pegulingan’s bronze gongs. The catchy melodies, serpentine ornamentation, and energizing rhythms of Mecanda (joking around) and Pesta (party) align most directly with the spirit of the album’s title, while the pensive Segara (sea) reconnects us with the roots of Balinese court music, and the fiery Tabuh Petegak Bebarongan Guna Geni (useful fire) showcases the group’s remarkable synergy.

Track Details

1. Segara
Sitting in wonder at the beach. Blue expanse as far as the eye can see. The mind at ease, sea breeze tickles the skin and carries a fresh aroma. Waves crashing against the coral create a dynamic and delightful rhythm.
Composer: I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik)
2. Elogan
This piece was inspired by the graceful movements of a kite floating on the wind. Elogan or ngelog describes its motion, flittering left and right. The flying kite stimulated my eyes, heart, and mind to want to translate its movement into gamelan music.
Composer: I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik)
3. Nafas
Humans breathe continuously, sometimes at a moderate pace, sometimes faster or slower, depending on the inner workings of their lives.
Composer: I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik)
4. Makenyir
The facial expression created by a radiant and cheerful smile inspired this instrumental work.
Composer: I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik)
5. Mecanda
Mecanda (joking) describes the intended humor and whimsy of the musical elements in this piece.
Composer: I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik)
6. Pesta
Cheerful, merry, absorbing, relaxed, exciting, that’s what a party’s all about…
Composer: I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik)
7. Tabuh Petegak Bebarongan Guna Geni
Guna means useful, geni means fire, and thus Guna Geni refers to the importance of fire to survival in this world. This bebarongan piece was inspired by humanity’s great use of fire. The interlocking figurations of the gangsa instruments ignite like sparks, and the kendang patterns smolder and contort to stimulate the ensemble’s rhythmic and melodic playing.
This performance was also imbued by the relief of finishing a long, but rewarding recording session…
Composer: I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik)
