I Made Terip‘s Sanggar Tripittaka of Desa Munduk, Kec. Banjar, Kab. Buleleng, Bali.
Nong Cret showcases Sanggar Tripittaka’s bamboo gumbyung ensemble with three new works composed by the ensemble’s creator, internationally renowned composer and teacher I Made Terip. This unique ensemble (est. 1995) utilizes a special five-tone tuning based on the more common four-tone angklung. This involved adding a fifth tone between the widest interval of the angklung scale (1 2 3 [+] 4). In addition to works for the gumbyung ensemble, the album includes three pieces for gender wayang performed by I Made Terip and I Ketut Mortal and a field recording of the insect nong cret (also cret nong) after which the title track is named. Sanggar Tripittaka is based in Desa Munduk, Kec. Banjar, Buleleng (North Bali), but performs regularly across the island at both temple ceremonies and music festivals.
