Ndag Surye (sunrise) features the raw new sounds of Tripittaka’s gumbyung ensemble, which first appeared in a different configuration on the 2016 release Nong Cret. The ensemble has since been rebuilt from the ground up in order to handle the energy of its new personnel—a small army of some of Munduk’s finest musical youth. Many of the instruments are now larger and louder, while others have been outfitted with small kulkul used to create crackling rhythmic textures unheard of in other similar ensembles. The album includes a selection of music composed by I Made Terip and his sons I Komang Kosil and I Ketut Cenik, who have reinvigorated the local scene by encouraging young musicians to take over. The result is energetic and melodic textures that advance an established family legacy as well as Munduk’s already celebrated and singular sound.
