The second volume in the Bibit (seedling) series features three new works for gender wayang by I Made Subandi and one traditional piece (Macan Ngerem) from the East Balinese district of Karangasem. Two of the included pieces have also been presented in multiple variants. This includes an arrangement for gender wayang batel (adding kajar, kendang, kecek, kelenang, klentong, and gong) and a performance using a pair of instruments from North Bali. Aum, Bibit, and Babuang are among I Made Subandi’s latest compositions for gender wayang and all three display his mastery of the figuration techniques and melodic style unique to the ensemble. All works are performed by his students at Sanggar Ceraken or the high school of performing arts SMK 3 Sukawati (KOKAR)—where he has taught for more than twenty years.
